Two Halves of the Same Year - Postcards from Shanghai - Origins
The beginning of my independent project, “Postcards from Shanghai.” After returning to Shanghai for the first time in over a year, I decided to reacquaint myself with the city by walking from my house to the Huangpo River, snaking through several of Shanghai’s main neighborhoods. In the process, I took photos of scenes and elements that stood out to me. Afterwards, while reviewing those images, several themes emerged: the tension between old and new, as well as the coexistence of the manmade and natural worlds. To highlight these themes, I began experimenting with collaging the photos using techniques I’d learned through die hua.
