Project 4
Butterfly Art Reproduction

Butterfly art is a traditional craft from Southwest China dating back to the Tang Dynasty. Artists create collages using wings from naturally deceased butterflies. The process starts with sketching a design, then selecting and trimming wings by color, shape, and texture. Using tweezers, glue, and scrapers, they carefully paste each piece onto fabric or paper, protected by sulfuric acid paper for detail work. Since a very young age, I have studied great masters of art and recreated their pieces using butterfly wings. The direction of each wing pattern reflects the brushstrokes and colors used by the original artist. This practice has not only allowed me to preserve this unique Chinese craft but also to learn the history of art through making. My butterfly-wing reinterpretation translates Van Gogh’s expressive brushwork into natural texture, replacing painted motion with organic iridescence.
